REGIONAL MEETING FOR CHEMICAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE, PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT FOR PACIFIC ISLAND STATES

The Permanent Secretary for Defence and National Security today opened the 2019 Regional Chemical Emergency Response Planning and Management Meeting at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi.

PS Lesuma welcomed the Officials from the Technical Secretariat of the Organization on the Prohibition of Chemicals Weapons (OPCW); Representative from the Pacific Island Forum, the regional participants and the national stakeholders to Nadi and assured them of the Fijian Governments full support to the regional meeting and the ultimate pursuit for a region free of chemical weapons.

PS Lesuma reminded those present that “As States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention, it is imperative that we put in place national mechanisms that will effectively address any Chemical incidents.” In addition, he stated that the success of this meeting will be determined by the formulation of a Plan of Action that will outline the regions chemical response capacity.
